Messiah Lutheran Church is blessed to have so many volunteer opportunities for members to serve the Lord. In order to help organize our volunteers, we occasionally ask church members to complete a time and talent survey. Your responses on this form will connect you to church volunteer organizers in the areas of your talents.

Act as a greeter to welcome people coming to a worship service. Time commitment: 15 minutes
Act as a host of the Welcome Center, prior to and immediately after a worship service. Assist individuals with any questions they may have about Messiah. Time commitment: 20 minutes
Arrive prior to the first Sunday morning service and make coffee for the after service fellowship. Another individual is needed to clean up following the final service. Time commitment: 20 minutes
Pick up the donut order from a local grocery store to be used for Sunday morning coffee. Commitment: 30 minutes, one Saturday a month
Pick up and take home any individual who may need a ride to or from church. This would be done on an as needed basis. Time commitment: flexible
Perform skits and short plays on an as needed basis. Time commitment: flexible
Run the soundboard and projection system during worship services. Time commitment: 1 hour
Clean the altar area each week, set out flowers, prepare for communion, etc. Serve with a group of 2 - 4 individuals. Time commitment: 1 hour per week during month serving
Provide a message to the children during a worship service. Time commitment: 5 minutes plus preparation time
Arrive prior to worship service and make sure everything is ready for the service. This includes setting out communion, assisting acolytes and assisting ushers. Also help serve communion. Time commitment: 1 hour each Sunday for the month you are working.
Assist pastor and worship assistant in distributing communion. Time commitment: 2 worship services a month
Read the scripture readings for the week during the worship service. Time commitment: 5 minutes during worship
Help during worship service to distribute News and Notes, assist in seating people if needed, take offering and usher people to communion. Work with a group of 3 - 4 people at the same service every other month. Time commitment: 1 hour
Work with other individuals to design, make and display various banners in the sanctuary. Time commitment: flexible
Work with elementary aged children grades K-2 on Wednesday evenings. Time commitment: 1 hour
File and keep track of music for the music and choir directors. Time commitment: flexible
Be part of the Messiah vocal choir. Commitment: 1 hr weekly rehearsals plus performances during various worship services
Sing or play an instrument during worship service as requested by the music director. Time commitment: flexible
Help lead the 11:00am Contemporary Worship - vocal and instrumental. Time commitment: 1 hour weekly rehearsals plus performances during worship service.
Be part of the Messiah hand bell Choir. Time commitment: 1 hour weekly rehearsals plus performances during various worship services.
Participate in the youth hand bell choirs. Time commitment: 1 hour weekly rehearsals plus performances during various worship services.
Go on a trip to minister God's word to people in a different location. Time commitment will vary depending upon the type of mission trip.
Contact visitors who have attended a recent worship service. Find out more about the individuals and encourage them to attend again. Time commitment: flexible
Help plan how Messiah (1) will equip members to share their faith verbally (2) send members on short and long term mission trips (3) plant a new church (4) encourage recruitment of full-time church workers. Time commitment: 3 hours per month
Be active in a local agency that works for change or assists those in need. Examples of such an agency would be MICAH, Social Concerns Network, Love INC, Crisis Nursery, Alexandra House, Tamarisk, Habitat for Humanity or another organization that matches your passion to serve others! Participate in this agency as a regular volunteer and/or attend their community meetings and then serve as a liaison to Messiah, making our church aware of needs and ways our members can also help or be involved. Time commitment: flexible
Be a part of a group of women that meet for fellowship and service to Messiah. Various informational programs are presented during the course of the year. The Women of Messiah is a part of Lutheran Women's Missionary League (LWML) that supports missions worldwide (Outreach). Service activities include serving for funerals, receptions and banquets when asked, and annual fund raising bazaar (In-Reach). Time commitment: 6 meetings per year plus service projects.
Assist in a variety of ways (setup, cleanup, food preparation, evening host, overnight host) during the time that guests from the Families Moving Forward program stay at Messiah. Time commitment: flexible depending upon the activity you are involved with
Assist with the semi-annual blood drive in registration, check-in and canteen. Time commitment: flexible
Oversee the collection of various items that will be sent off to mission organizations. Time commitment: flexible
Gather food that is donated each month and deliver it to local food pantries. Time commitment: 2 hours
Be a member of the group that is responsible for making the major business decisions of Messiah such as budget and staffing. Members of the Leadership Council are elected for a 2-year term. Time commitment: 2 meetings a month
Be a part of a group of men that oversees the spiritual needs of Messiah. In addition, this group provides counseling and assistance to the pastor and staff as needed. Time commitment: flexible
Be part of the group that develops and institutes the stewardship program at Messiah. Assist with various projects of the stewardship program (Time and Talents, Pledge Drive, Mission Appeals). Time commitment: 1 hour monthly meeting plus special projects
Keep records of new babies born in the congregation and send informational mailings to their parents at different times in the child's development during the first 2 years. Time commitment: flexible
Assist in the planning and running of the Sunday school program. Duties include recruiting teachers and finding and developing curriculum for the Sunday school to follow. Time commitment: flexible
Lead the music portion of the Sunday school opening each Sunday morning. Time commitment: 30 minutes
Coordinate Sunday School mission project as selected by the Sunday School. Time commitment: flexible
Teach or assist a Sunday morning Sunday school class for children age 3 through grade 5. Time commitment:1 hour September through May plus occasional teachers meeting.
Be willing to host a Bible study in your home on a periodic basis. Time commitment: flexible
Teach an adult Bible study. The Bible studies typically are on Sunday mornings, but could also occur on some other day of the week. Time commitment: flexible
Work with elementary aged children grades K-5 on Wednesday evenings. Time commitment: 1 hour
Teach or assist the confirmation program on Wednesday evenings. Time commitment: 2 hours
Preschool meets from 9-11:30 and is in session from September through May. A teacher or substitute must be MN certified and an aide must be at least 18 years of age. All must submit to a background check. Work would be on an as needed basis.
Puppetry can be entertaining or informative. Stories that are appropriate for 3-5 year olds could be presented to the classes after arrangements made with the teacher. Story would be during class time for no more that 15 minutes. This could be a one-time occurrence or may be repeated on another date.
Assistance with room set-up involves moving chairs, tables and furniture. Several events are held during the school year and are scheduled in advance. Duration of each set up or take down would be approximately 30 minutes.
Teach a class to middle school through high school students, usually on Sunday morning. Time commitment: flexible
Help plan and organize recruiting of small-group study hosts and leaders. Time commitment: 1 hour quarterly, plus assist with small group registration tables twice a year.
Provide support and leadership to the Junior Youth of Messiah. This may entail leading a Bible Study or acting as a mentor or chaperone. Time commitment: flexible
Provide support and leadership to the Senior Youth of Messiah. This may entail leading a Bible Study or acting as a mentor or chaperone. Time commitment: flexible
Act as an adult chaperone for various youth activities and outings. Time commitment: flexible
Be a part of weekly senior adult activities such as Bible studies, field trips and potlucks. Time commitment: flexible
Be part of a group of men who gather for Bible Study and fellowship. Time commitment: flexible
Help organize and set up the fall kick-off for various programs (Sunday school, music, Bible studies) at Messiah. Time commitment: seasonal
Be a part of weekly young adult activities such as Bible studies. Time commitment: flexible
Be part of a group that periodically gets together for various activities (book study, Bible study, etc.). Time commitment: flexible
Be willing to organize a group of people to read and discuss a mutually agreed upon book. Time commitment: flexible
Plan neighborhood events at church for National Night Out. Time commitment: 1 time per year
Plan an event for all members of Messiah to attend. This could be a regular or a one-time event. Time commitment: flexible
Meet with other couples periodically to play bridge. Time commitment: monthly matches
Meet monthly at church and play scrabble. Time commitment: 2 hours
Meet weekly at church and play cribbage. Time commitment: 2 hours
Play weekly during the summer on a Messiah slow pitch softball team. Time commitment: 2 hours
Play weekly on a Messiah wallyball team. Time commitment: 2 hours
Play a fun round of golf with other Messiah members in support of a deserving charity. Commitment: 1 September afternoon
Meet with others to discuss various books that you are reading together.
Prepare a meal as an expression of support and caring for an individual or family during a challenging time (new baby, illness, death, etc.). Time commitment: flexible
Occasionally telephone members of Messiah to relay important information or conduct a survey. Time commitment: flexible
Attend multi-week training session to become a Stephen Minister. Stephen Ministers then are assigned to an individual to provide support during a time of need. The Stephen Minister team members meet on a monthly basis. Time commitment: Visit care receiver weekly, 1 hour per visit
Befriend someone who is ill or homebound through regular visits. A one time training session is required prior to being assigned. Time commitment: Visit care receiver 2 times per month
Oversee young children in the nursery on Sunday mornings during a worship service. Time commitment: flexible
Deliver DVD's that contain the worship service from the previous Sunday to shut-ins and anyone who is unable to attend worship. Time commitment: flexible
Assist in the preparation and serving of a meal on a given Wednesday evening. Time commitment: 2 hours
Provide food as needed for funeral lunches. Time commitment: flexible
Provide food as needed for any special activity that may be taking place. Time commitment: flexible
Be a part of an organization that meets monthly to equip mothers in raising their families. Time commitment: 3 hours
Be part of a prayer chain group that receives prayer requests. Each individual will spend time in prayer for each prayer request received. Time commitment: flexible
Responsible for overseeing supervision at the monthly Stephen Meetings. In addition requires one to two meetings per year with the other Stephen Coordinators. Time commitment: flexible
Connects individuals needing a Stephen Minister with a trained Stephen Minister. This person needs to be a caring listener, trustworthy, have good phone skills and be reliable. In addition requires one to two meetings per year with the other Stephen Coordinators. Time commitment: flexible
Collects information for monthly newsletter and News & Notes (reminders, general information, publicity for recruiting new Stephen Ministers). In addition requires one to two meetings per year with the other Stephen Coordinators. Time commitment: flexible
Works as liaison with area churches' training collaborative (meets 4 times per year). Present at some of the fall training classes (about 4). In addition requires one to two meetings per year with the other Stephen Coordinators. Time commitment: flexible
Plans the Continuing Education schedule for the monthly Stephen Ministry meetings. Also prepares the materials and equipment needed. In addition requires one to two meetings per year with the other Stephen Coordinators. Time commitment: flexible
Leads the overall function of the Stephen Ministry Program. Plans agenda for monthly meetings and facilitates meetings. In addition requires one to two meetings per year with the other Stephen Coordinators. Develops and monitors budget. Time commitment: 4-6 hours per month.
Perform carpentry work on an as needed basis. Time commitment: flexible
Perform general repair work on an as needed basis. Time commitment: flexible
Provide gardening work for various locations on the grounds of Messiah. This would include planting and watering on as needed basis throughout the summer months. Time commitment: flexible
Be part of a group that mows and trims the lawn. Time commitment: 2 hours every 5 to 6 weeks depending upon the number of people who volunteer.
Be part of a group that shovels the sidewalks around the church if it snows on a weekend. This will ensure that the sidewalks are clear and safe for people attending worship. Time commitment: on call about every 3rd weekend in the event of a snowfall.
Be part of a group that can paint various rooms within Messiah. This would be done on an as needed basis. Time commitment: flexible
Be part of a group of individuals who meet at Messiah each Tuesday morning to perform repair and maintenance on the church facility. Time commitment: 2 hours
Take down or set up of tables and chairs in various rooms in our facility for special functions or meetings. Standard set up directions are posted in each room. Time required depends on number of rooms and would involve set up for new activity. After the event the rooms need to be returned to the standard set up. Time commitment: 15 - 30 minutes.
Assist in maintaining the computers and computer network. The group meets monthly to work on various computer related tasks that arise. Time commitment: flexible
Enter data into the Messiah computer system as needed. Time commitment: flexible
Help with general office duties during the week. Duties would include, answering telephone, making copies and organize mailings. Time commitment: Three 1/2 hour shifts from 9am to 12:30pm and 12:30pm to 4pm, Monday through Friday.
Be part of a group that counts and records data on the weekly offering on a Sunday morning. Each team consists of 3 individuals. Time commitment: 2 hours one Sunday a month.
Design and create brochure and handouts to be used for the various programs at Messiah. Time commitment: flexible
Gather and provide required information to an organization that will provide grant money for specific qualifying projects at Messiah. Time commitment: flexible
Place ads in the local papers announcing/inviting the community to our services. Time commitment: flexible
Assist in the creation of the PowerPoint presentations that are used each week during worship service. Time commitment: flexible
Deliver donated items to selected organizations. Time commitment: flexible
Assist in updating and editing phone directory annually. Time commitment: flexible
Help with regular updating of the church web site or surf the web to promote our church in free directories. Interested individuals may also participate in web improvement and design ideas by joining the Web Team. Time commitment: flexible
Help setup and maintain the building security system. This includes setting up door schedules and distributing the building access key cards. Time commitment: flexible
Change the message that appears within the Messiah sign on the church lawn. The sign is changed once a week. Time commitment: 30 minutes
Maintain books and videos in the church library. Time commitment: flexible
